In 2016, the town square at South Australia’s iconic seaside community of Henley Beach, underwent a major upgrade.
Part of the upgrade included several cast Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) ‘Flotsam’ benches, which Spark developed and produced for the project.
The white, full-scale model of the Flotsam bench is the ‘positive mould’ from which the negative mould was made. The negative mould was then sprayed with coat upon coat of GRC, the layers gradually builing up until the mould was full. Once cured, the resulting Flotsam benches are identical in form, to the positive mould.
The Flotsam benches were coated with a protective finish, and installed with polished stainless steel anti-skates along the perimeter of the benches.
With their mysterious, amorphous shape, the Flotsams look like they might have floated up from the ocean depths and been rolled onto the beach by the waves.
