Rundle Mall

Transformed from a busy city street to a pedestrian shopping district in 1976, Rundle Mall was ready for a major revitalisation by 2015, when Adelaide City council decided to upgrade the mall’s spacious environment, create space for pop-up events, and attract a broad range of visitors.

Project designers, Hassell Studio, in collaboration with ARUP, presented Spark with furniture elements that complimented the design, “inspired by the shifting patterns of the South Australian landscape.” These included benches, seats, leaning rails, bin enclosures, and the large, tiered statement platforms at both ends of the mall.

The designs incorporate the use of hardwood timbers, polished granite blocks, and 8mm thick stainless steel with waterjet cut patterns of circles in varying sizes. Stainless steel and granite offer the benefit of being both highly durable and easy to maintain.

The Rundle Mall furniture suite has become part of the identity of this popular and busy Adelaide shopping precinct.
